History
Why is History important in our school?
Teaching History in Sudley Primary School offers numerous benefits for children. It helps them make sense of the world around them by connecting the past with the present. By studying History, pupils gain a deeper understanding of who we are, where we come from, and why things are the way they are today. History sparks children's natural curiosity, encouraging them to explore and learn about the world around them. By studying History, pupils not only gain knowledge but also learn valuable skills for their future.
The Sudley Primary History curriculum inspires our children through our diverse local history as well as building their knowledge and understanding of significant eras in British and global history. Our high-quality History education encourages children to use a variety of skills to find out about and compare significant historical events and people to how life is now. We focus upon the challenges within societies as well as developing the concept of chronology.
How is History taught in our school?
Our curriculum is well sequenced to ensure that children are able to develop their understanding and build on previous learning. In Key Stage 1 children begin by developing their awareness of the past and introduce them to key historical events people and changes in their local and national history.
In Year 3 and 4, children study ancient civilisations, nationally and globally, allowing them to compare and contrast different eras. In Upper Key Stage 2, children’s historical knowledge is deepened further by studying local topics, which they are able to connect to, in addition to revisiting significant eras from lower key stage two. By following this systemic approach, we are able to ensure that learning sticks. As historians, we value the importance of understanding the historical narrative and deepening our historians understanding of chronology is at the heart of every topic. Historical vocabulary is taught in a structured and cumulative way from Early Years to Year 6.
In History, we are committed to ensuring that all children, including those with additional needs, have equal access to the full curriculum. To achieve this, we implement a variety of tailored strategies and support structures, designed to meet each child’s unique needs. These include and specialised resources, such adapted learning materials and approaches as well as scaffolded support to help students engage fully with the History curriculum.
