Music
Why is music important in our school?
At Sudley Primary School we believe that a high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music. We aim to nurture their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, perform with solo and ensemble opportunities and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. We believe that Sudley Primary School is the stepping stone for a life long love of music.
How is music taught in our school?
At Sudley Primary, every student participates in a bi-weekly music lesson, complemented by weekly singing assemblies that emphasize vocal technique and development. From Year 2 onward, all music instruction is delivered by a specialist, ensuring that lessons are practical and performance-based. Through active engagement in performing, composing, and listening, students acquire a solid understanding of the rudiments and elements of music, fostering both resilience and a lifelong passion for music.
Our carefully structured curriculum builds cumulative musical knowledge, ensuring students retain key concepts as they progress through the various key stages. This approach equips them with the skills necessary for continued growth, both as musicians and as individuals, preparing them for life beyond Sudley. Students regularly reflect on their learning, developing into confident, well-rounded musicians who are eager to share their musical achievements.
Music lessons at Sudley rotate between solo, duet, and whole-class ensemble performances, supported by an array of high-quality resources, including tuned and untuned percussion instruments and keyboards.
We offer numerous performance opportunities throughout the year, where parents and carers can engage with the students' musical progress. Highlights include the annual Carol Service for Year 2 and Year 6, performances by the School Choir with the Allerton Brass Band at the Tung Auditorium, the Year 1 and EYFS Nativity Play, Year 4's Christmas performance, and the Year 6 Leaving Performance. Additionally, two charity coffee mornings are held annually, showcasing curriculum-based performances and offering soloists the opportunity to perform.
Children in year 3 enjoy a live performance from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and this year we are launching our very own Concert Series as we invite professional musicians in to perform for our children.
The Year 5 and 6 School Choir rehearses weekly, and students can also access lunchtime music theory tuition. We further enrich our musical provision with weekly subsidised instrumental lessons, delivered by specialist peripatetic teachers in woodwind and guitar, available to students in Years 4, 5, and 6.
In music, we are committed to ensuring that all children, including those with additional needs, have equal access to the full curriculum. To achieve this, we implement a variety of tailored strategies and support structures, designed to meet each child’s unique needs. These include and specialised resources, such adapted learning materials and approaches as well as scaffolded support to help students engage fully with the music curriculum.
