PSHE

Why is PSHE important in our school?

At our school, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic education) is a vital part of our curriculum, helping to equip children with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to navigate the world confidently and responsibly. Through engaging lessons, we promote emotional well-being, resilience, and respect for others, while fostering a strong sense of community and belonging. PSHE enables children to become reflective and responsible individuals by developing key life skills, such as managing relationships, making safe choices, and understanding the importance of being respectful and inclusive. By addressing real-world topics and encouraging thoughtful discussion, we empower our children to build resilience and become well-rounded, informed individuals prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

How is PSHE taught in our school?

At our school, the teaching of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic education) follows the statutory guidance set out in the National Curriculum. The primary aim is to equip children with the essential knowledge, skills, and values to lead safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Our PSHE curriculum is carefully sequenced to build upon prior learning, ensuring that children develop cumulative knowledge that grows year by year. We achieve this by checking children’s understanding during ‘Retrieval Practise’ at the start of every PSHE lesson.

Through a structured program, we emphasise the use of key vocabulary to support understanding and communication, helping children articulate their thoughts and ideas with confidence. New vocabulary and themes are introduced at the beginning of each topic. Class teachers model new concepts and words to the children during whole class discussions. We allow children to practise independently using this vocabulary in context through role-play. This enables children to go out into our local community and live these values. Children are supported in retaining knowledge through engaging and reflective activities, enabling them to apply what they have learned to real-life situations. Our curriculum fosters respectful relationships, celebrates diversity, and promotes equality. By embedding these principles, we ensure children are prepared for the opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities of modern life.

In PSHE, we are committed to ensuring that all children, including those with additional needs, have equal access to the full curriculum. To achieve this, we implement a variety of tailored strategies and support structures, designed to meet each child’s unique needs. These include and specialised resources, such adapted learning materials and approaches as well as scaffolded support to help students engage fully with the PSHE curriculum.

What will children get from the teaching of PSHE?

At Sudley Primary School we ensure that children develop into confident, resilient, and responsible individuals equipped to thrive in an ever-changing world. They will demonstrate respect for themselves and others (both on and offline), celebrate diversity, and engage in reflective and thoughtful discussions about important issues. Children will build upon prior knowledge, use key vocabulary effectively, and retain the knowledge they need to make informed, safe choices in their lives. You will see children displaying empathy, forming positive relationships, and actively contributing to a respectful and inclusive school environment. They will leave Sudley Primary School prepared to navigate challenges, embrace opportunities, and play an active, constructive role in their communities.
